Virtual School Update - Mr.
Bolinger presented an update on the virtual school. As a
result of the latest legislative session, virtual school exclusivity
for charter schools was not included in the final bill approved.
BHCA is continuing the application to offer a new virtual school high
school. Funds approved for summer work to establish the virtual
school will not be used.
SAC's results - Mrs.
Higgins presented the results of the SACS Accreditation Visit.
Facilities
Kitchen upgrade - Dr.Kitts met with the PTSP to discuss items unfinished within the school. Specifically, the kitchen remains incomplete. We are accepting additional bids at this time for completion. The PTSP has pledged $30,000 for completion of kitchen.
Final bids will be brought to the Board for approval. PTSP is
funding the completion of the kitchen, therefore the Board does not
need to approve any funds for this purpose.
Free and Reduced Lunch---Sharon Baskevic will be attending training in Tallahassee along with Cathy Sauls to investigate the possibility of becoming a sponsor for the Free and Reduced Lunch Program. If BHCA becomes a sponsor, all meals and snacks ( milk, etc.) will be reimbursed. We would need our own system to process lunches. However, the Lunch Minder program that we currently use could include free and reduced lunches. The costs of updating and implementing this program will be anywhere between
meals a day.
Locker room progress - Dr. Kitts shared that we are way ahead in
completing all gym additions. Currently we do not have a
final date for completion.
Landscaping - Lawnscapes are re-fortifying our fields.
Canopies over the elementary playground will begin to be put in place
June 17th.
Students
Summer enrichment camp/ Summer Academic Assistance Camp - Tammy Graham presented information on summer camps offered at
BHCA. Currently, 277
students enrolled in summer camps.
Choir and band results
in Orlando - Both did quite well at competition. The band won
3rd place and the choir won first place in each categorical
competition.
FCAT results update - Mrs.
Moore presented FCAT results for the 2008 school year. Once again,
BHCA students did quite well on both the NRT and the SSS FCAT.
Student supply lists
for fall 08 - Supply lists are online currently. Supply lists
have been reduced by some degree for each grade level.
Student Summer Packets - Students
have 3 choices in summer work. Choices include: BHCA summer
camp, summer packets and summer bridge. Students who complete any of
the three choices will be "rewarded" for the work that they have
done.
Retention information - Dr. Kitts presented information regarding retentions for elementary and middle school retentions for 2008.
Including timeline updates
for implementing retentions.
Dr. Kitts asked
the members of the Board to access Donorschoose.org.
This is a website for teachers to put in proposals/requests for projects,
classroom resources, enrichment needs etc. People from all
over the world can choose to donate to the teachers requests/proposals.
Budget
April financials - Emails
were sent on April/May financials.
Other
Dress Code - Dr. Kitts addressed issues with middle school dress code violations. Specifically, girls are rolling up/down skirts to shorten the length and they are wearing wide belts that eliminate the need to tuck in their shirts.
Karen Brown moved to advertise the amended policy change to read:
Students may not wear belts if their bottomwear ( shorts, skirts, skorts) do not have belt loops. All belts worn must fit within the belt loops. Shorts/skorts/skirts must not be shorter than 5 inches above the knee.
Neel Bennett seconded
the motion. The motion carried.
Ad Valorem tax - Tim
Sloan presented information regarding Ad Valorem tax as well Sunshine
Law and Public Records Law.
BHCA Foundation - Tim
Sloan discussed the possibility of "crossing over" the BHCA Foundation
with the BHCA Board of Directors. After investigating the concept,
Tim Sloan recommended that the BHCA Foundation remain a separate body
with its own Board.
St. Joe - Tim Kitts presented an update on the St. Joe discussions/agreement. The last proposal submitted by St. Joe
is not in line with previous
discussions. Discussion took place regarding the statute of limitations
on this issue. Neel Bennett moved that the Board Attorney draft
a letter to St. Joe restating our past history, refusing the latest
proposal and advising them of the timeline regarding our statute of
limitations. In addition, in light of the statute of limitations deadline
and failing to meet the settlement deadline of 60 days we authorize
the BHCA attorney to file suit to seek collection of the monies claimed.
Wade Rhinehart seconded the motion. Motion carried.
School Minder - Tim Kitts
and Sharon Baskevic discussed the School Minder Email program.
This program allows for information to be sent to parents via email,
including class announcements, report cards, school announcements etc.
The software should be here next week. The costs of the program
are minimal.
Old Business -
New Business - Tim Kitts
presented the BHCA presentation to be given at the National Charter
Schools Convention.
