The Chief Education Officer (CEO) of Bay Haven Charter Academy, Inc. is Dr. Timothy Kitts, Ed.D. Dr. Kitts has over 30 years of teaching and administrative experience in public, private, church and university level education. He was recruited to Central Michigan University on a gymnastics scholarship in 1974 where he earned a BS in education in 1978. In 1979, he became the women's gymnastics coach at Miami of Ohio where he earned his MS degree in Athletic Administration. Stints coaching and teaching at San Jose' State University while managing and coaching private gymnastics clubs offered a variety of experiences. Dr. Kitts arrived in Panama City, Florida in 1984 to coach and eventually own Panastics Gymnastics club. He taught Spanish, Physical Education and Science in both middle and high school before he departed to complete his doctorate in Educational Leadership at Northern Arizona University in 1991. In Arizona, Dr. Kitts became the principal of Holbrook Junior High School. Later, he and his wife Connie moved to Michigan where he was principal of Williamston Middle School until the call came to return to Panama City. In 1995, the Kitts family, including children Mary, Sean and Hannah moved to Panama City where Dr. Kitts served as an assistant principal at Surfside Middle School and then at Rutherford High School. The opportunity became available to build, from the ground floor up, the first charter school in Bay County, Florida. Dr. Kitts and his wife Connie seized the moment and built, with a dedicated team, what is well regarded as one of the United States' top charter schools. The school's vision is High Expectations/High Achievement. Dr. Kitts states, "At Bay Haven, we are in the business of education and not the entitlement of education". This vision and philosophy have served well in academic, business, athletic and fine arts achievement. Dr. Kitts serves as the chairman of the Advocacy Committee for the Florida Consortium of Public Charter Schools and recently was appointed by Florida Governor, Charlie Crist, to chair the Florida Charter School Review Panel. Dr. Kitts also continues to serve on the board of the United Way of Northwest Florida. |
